Despite the inherent dangers, the mining industry continually sought ways to boost productivity. The use of explosives became common practice to break through rock and extend mine tunnels rapidly. These advancements were complemented by the introduction of steam engines, which played a crucial role in pumping water out of the mines, thereby preventing flooding and allowing for deeper excavation.
The expansion of mining operations created a variety of new job opportunities. Carpenters and engineers were needed to construct and reinforce the tunnel infrastructure, ensuring the safety and stability of the mines. Small children, primarily boys, were employed to guide donkeys and ponies that hauled coal through the tunnels. This practice, though seen as necessary at the time, exposed young workers to the same risks faced by adult miners, contributing to the high incidence of injuries and fatalities.
